GET STARTED ON YOUR OUTDOOR PRE-WINTER MAINTENANCE TASKS
Don’t wait until the first frost to tackle your winter outdoor home maintenance tasks. The following tips cover the yard, patio, deck, and other outdoor spaces. If you get started on these now, while the weather is still mild, you’ll be ahead by the time the first snow falls.
Here’s a checklist to get you started:
- Clean and check gutters. Remove any fallen leaves and other yard debris from your gutters. Don’t forget the downspouts – make sure they’re clear from debris and secure.
- Flush underground sprinkler systems or garden hoses. If you have a sprinkler system, be sure to schedule a flush out and winter shut down. Also shut down your exterior faucets.
- Examine your wooden deck for any loose or splintered boards. Either secure them or replace them before the winter, as snow and ice can cause further damage.
- Check patios and concrete front steps for cracks or loose bricks. Also check to make sure handrails are secure. Make any repairs before the winter weather sets in.
- Remove any damaged or broken limbs on trees before winter storms.
- Cover any delicate plants or small trees with burlap to protect them in the cold.
